It’s no news that the iconic Hummer is back, but instead of coming in the form of the original gas-guzzling military-inspired vehicles, the new Hummer vehicle chooses to be a green off-roader with more futuristic amenities.
GM has always been clear on its plans to commit to the electrification of its lineup. Months after releasing the 2022 Hummer EV pickup truck, the American automaker has announced that it will be launching an SUV version of the electric truck.
While the old gas-powered Hummer offers a remarkable off-road ability, the resurrected and electrified Hummer SUV is more impressive and promises to provide more power and more advanced tech niceties. Like the Hummer EV truck, the upcoming Hummer EV SUV runs on the GM’s Ultium battery system that supports quick charging an estimated driving range of up to 300 miles.
Powertrain & Performance
Like the Hummer EV pickup, the upcoming Hummer EV SUV will be available in three different trim levels and a First Edition model. Powering this all-electric SUV will be two or three electric motors, depending on the trim level. While the EV2 and EV2X come with two electric motors that combine to generate 625 horsepower and 7400 pound-feet of torque, the EV3X and the Edition 1 models boast three electric motors, one at the front wheel and two at the rear, with an acclaimed 830 horsepower and about 1,045 lb-ft of torque.
GMC claims that the most powerful Hummer EV SUV can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. This is undoubtedly quick for a big SUV like the Hummer. Unlike the Hummer EV pickup, the SUV version comes with a shorter dimension, making it easier to maneuver in and out of tight spaces. It also boasts some remarkable off-road equipment common in the Hummer EV truck, including 18-inch wheels and available 37-inch tires, adjustable air suspension with Extract mode, and four-wheel steering with CrabWalk. The 2024 Hummer EV SUV also comes with a Super Cruise hands-free driving assist.
Range & Charging
The 2024 Hummer EV SUV utilizes the GM’s Ultium battery system and a large 200.0-kWh battery pack that provides a driving range of 250 to 300 miles on a full charge, depending on the trim level.
While the base model sports a 400-volt fast charging, the rest of the lineup will likely support 800 volts charging.
Interior, Cargo
The inside of the Hummer EV SUV is as pleasant and stylish as the exterior. The Hummer engineers and designers did a great job blending futuristic minimalism with industrial brutalism. The well-built Hummer cabin sports a horizontal dash with two large screens—a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a long list of connectivity options.
The Hummer is spacious and comfortable, with removal roof panels.
