Years after teasing us with its upcoming EV truck, Ford has finally confirmed that this electric version of the gas-powered F-150 truck will be available later this year. The F-150 has been Ford’s best-selling truck for over four decades. This time around, the renowned American automaker is swapping the truck’s gasoline-powered V-6 and V-8 engine for a pair of electric motors and different battery packs.
The Ford’s all-electric full-size pickup truck shares many features with the gas-powered F-150. It comes standard with an all-wheel drive system and can tow up to 10,000 pounds. Besides dumping the combustion engines for batteries and electric motors, the F-150 Lightning is an all-new model and affords more futuristic elements. This electric truck is a new force in the segment. With the base work truck coming with a starting price that undercuts most of its close rivals, Ford sends a strong message that you don’t need deep pockets to go electric.
Powertrain & Performance
The 2022 F-150 Lightning starts with a crew cab, just like the regular F-150. However, instead of the familiar gasoline powertrain, Lightning comes standard with two electric motors and an all-wheel drive. With its standard battery pack and dual electric motors, this all-electric truck generates 426 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque—more power and torque than what you can get from the regular F-150. Switching to the Extended-Range battery pushes the power output to 563 horses.
Compared to the gas-powered F-150 that comes with the conventional solid-axle rear suspension, the 2022 F-150 comes standard with an independent rear suspension that helps it deliver an improved handling and more comfortable ride quality over the regular F-150.
Towing & Hauling
With the two different battery packs come different towing and payload figures. The F-150 with the standard range battery pack can tow up to 7700-pound and haul about 1800 pounds. The F-150 with the heavier extended-range battery pack will provide up to 10,000 pounds of towing capacity and a max payload capacity of 2,000 pounds.
Range & Charging
Ford says its electric truck with the standard 98.0-kWh battery pack will deliver about 230 miles of range on a single charge. Moving up with the larger 131.0-kWh battery pack boosts its driving range to 300 miles per charge.
Ford says that its all-electric truck can use 120- and 240-volt outlets at home. Recharging this electric truck with the Ford’s Charging Station Pro will gain 30 miles of driving range every one hour. Public DC fast-charging stations (150-kW station) can charge the battery from 15 to 80% in 40 minutes.
Interior, Cargo
Inside, the new F-150 Lightning interior is almost similar to the regular F-150. Both Ford trucks boast a well-built cabin with ample passenger space and nice materials. However, the 2022 F-150 Lightning sports a larger infotainment screen—a 12.0- inch to 15.0-inch display. This Ford electric truck also boasts more trunk space and more updated tech features to separate it from the gasoline F-150. Ford says this truck will pack the brand’s hands-free driving system and BlueCruise.
As this electric truck nears its official launch date, we will keep you updated about features and any new changes, and more.
