First, it introduced the Ioniq 5 crossover in 2021. Now, Hyundai is looking to increase its electric vehicle portfolio, which the Korean automaker calls the Ioniq line of EVs with a new Ioniq 6.
Inspired by the Hyundai Prophecy concept, this four-door Hyundai electric vehicle comes with a sweeping design, low roofline, and a built-in rear spoiler that gives it a sportier edge. This all-new model will be the Ioniq sub-brand’s first all-electric sedan and utilize the brand’s E-GMP platform. It will likely share many similarities with Ioniq 5 SUV. This means that the upcoming Ioniq 6 could come with up to two electric motors and numerous battery packs that will generate a driving range of about 300 miles on a charge.
While Hyundai hasn’t released many details about its first electric sedan, images from spy shots suggest that besides the stylish and athletic stance of the 2023 Ioniq 6, it could be more luxurious and afford more desirable tech features than the gas-powered Hyundai sedans.
Although we doubt if this Hyundai has what it takes to compete against the best cars in its growing segment, we believe that it will present a decent alternative to many shoppers.
Powertrain & Performance
As the Ioniq 6 shares the same platform as the Ioniq 5 crossover, there’s every chance that the upcoming Ioniq 6 electric sedan will come standard with a similar powertrain to the Ioniq 5. If that’s the case, then the base models of the 2023 Ioniq 6 will be powered by a 168-kW single electric motor on the rear wheels that produces 225 horsepower. Moving up the trim will be the dual electric motors (front and rear electric motors) that send power through all the four wheels will deliver a power output of 320 horsepower.
Range & Charging
If this all-electric Hyundai sedan must compete well in its class, it must deliver up to 300 miles of driving range per charge. Hyundai has claimed that the Electric Global Modular Platform enables long driving ranges on all Ioniq models. And since the Ioniq 5 maxes out up to 303 miles on a charge, the Ioniq 6, which is likely to come with the same battery pack, should get a similar driving range. Also, given this sedan’s more aerodynamic styling, it could achieve better ratings than the Ioniq 5.
Interior, Cargo
Hyundai is yet to release any detail about the interior of the Ioniq 6—not even an image is available yet. However, we expect this electric sedan to offer a more luxurious and tech-stacked cabin, unlike the Ioniq 5 with a simple and straightforward cabin. We expect Hyundai to replicate the sleek exterior styling of the Ioniq 6 inside the cabin as well. We could also be getting two giant screens at the dash.
So far, Hyundai has been all about delivering Ioniq models with comfortable cabins. We expect the Ioniq 6 to follow the same pattern. Although its cargo area may not be the best in the class, we hope it will deliver a decent cargo hold area.
As Hyundai makes more information about its second fully electric vehicle under the Ioniq sub-brand available, we will update you with all you need to know.
